Reference standards need their own traceability
How identity, source, qualification, storage and use records support defensible analytical comparisons.
Reference materials are part of the analytical evidence chain. Their source, identity, assigned value or qualification status and period of use affect the meaning of comparisons made against them.
Traceability should extend through receipt, storage, preparation and use. Records should distinguish primary standards, qualified secondary standards and working solutions so that an analyst can reconstruct which material supported a result.
For procurement review, the objective is not to collect every internal laboratory record. It is to obtain proportionate confirmation that the relevant reference material was controlled and suitable for the stated analytical purpose.

- Identify the reference material and source
- Confirm qualification or assigned-value basis
- Review storage and validity controls
- Trace working preparations to the source
- Match the standard to the analytical purpose
